Nestled in the scenic village of Pontneddfechan, Sgwd Gwladys stands out as a true gem that masterfully blends the best of a restaurant, lodge, and tourist attraction all in one charming location. Whether you’re here to refuel after exploring the stunning nearby waterfalls or simply craving a memorable dining experience, Sgwd Gwladys offers a warm welcome and an inviting atmosphere that lingers long after your visit.
As a restaurant, Sgwd Gwladys delights with a diverse and thoughtfully crafted menu that caters to a broad spectrum of tastes and dietary preferences. From hearty classics such as the iconic sgwd Full English Breakfast and perfectly crispy Fish and Chips, to indulgent crowd-pleasers like Homemade Lasagne and the succulent Southern Fried Chicken Burger, the kitchen never disappoints. For those who cherish plant-based dining, the Vegan Burger Stack and Chickpea & Butternut Squash Curry bring vibrant, flavorful options that feel anything but an afterthought. Sensory delights abound in every bite: imagine sinking into moist, rich Carrot Cake or savoring the velvety smoothness of their decadent White Chocolate Cake.
The small plates and starters are no less remarkable, ranging from the crisp and spicy zing of Korean Chicken Wings to the fresh, colorful Veggie Poke Bowl and the wonderfully tender Ham Hock, Pea and Mustard Terrine. Cocktails here are crafted with care—distilled to perfection with offerings like the sultry Espresso Martini and the refreshing zing of the Gin Fizz—ideal for unwinding after a day on the trails.
One of the most charming aspects of Sgwd Gwladys is its friendly, attentive staff, who create an atmosphere that feels both relaxed and refined. Whether you're enjoying a cozy cappuccino or indulging in a robust beef burger, the service is consistently praised for being diligent and warm. Vegan diners, such as customer Carl Perkins, emphasize how the staff take genuine care to ensure dietary needs are expertly met, making every visit stress-free and enjoyable.
Moreover, the lodge element of Sgwd Gwladys complements the culinary offer flawlessly. Guests like Aidan Breedt have noted how the comfortable, clean rooms—with clever features like Velux windows—make for a perfect retreat following the famous Four Waterfalls walk. While the area carries a natural buzz at night, the lodge provides a cozy sanctuary for a restful night’s sleep, marrying comfort with convenience.
Beyond food and lodging, the location itself is a highlight. Set close to the spectacular Waterfall Country, Sgwd Gwladys serves as the perfect base for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike. After a refreshing stroll by cascading falls, relaxing with a fresh pint or a rich hot chocolate here feels incredibly satisfying—something David Macdonald and Abigail Clements have echoed in their glowing remarks about the welcoming atmosphere and quality finds on the menu.
Whether you’re after a casual bite, a soulful Sunday roast, or a place to stay while uncovering Neath’s spectacular heritage, Sgwd Gwladys delivers a uniquely inviting experience. It’s clear that every element—from the enticing dishes and curated drink list to the heartfelt service and comfortable lodge rooms—combines to create moments that stay with you. For anyone exploring the region, this is more than a stop along the way; it’s a destination in its own right.
Always a warm welcome of the staff, particularly lovely after a strut round the falls! They keep a lovely pint and the grub I've had there has been belting. I'm vegan and still well catered to. I like how the staff don't guess if they aren't sure and they're diligent in checking, seems daft to say but it's rare and reassuring! If packed as it regularly is, you can still hear yourself think as well as chat away. I've run pubs for a good spell, nothing to do with this 1 at all. But I'd be proud if it were mine cause they do a belting job
Only popped in for coffee after a walk…..saw the food and thought we’d stay and eat Sunday lunch was amazing. Staff couldn’t be lovelier. Amazing find.
Great place, this is our second visit returning from last year. We had the sirloin steak and this was cooked to perfection! Melt in the mouth. The team are so friendly and went above and beyond for our daughter making a memorable experience.
Ended up booking this place after the food at the accommodation we were stopping at didn't pass muster. I noticed a few poor reviews, but to be fair it was more the accommodation side of the place that was mentioned; size mostly. It has the vibe of a cafe, but it's a lovely little place. We turned up on steak night, 40 pound a couple with a drink. Turned out to be a real bargain. With two deserts, under 55 pound. Excellent quality and lovely service. One point that others have mentioned is parking. We were lucky, but during a busy day, I guess it could be an issue.
The service was amazing, as was the yummy food and generous portions. The ambience was great too, including the music! The room was clean and cozy, and the velux windows were a lifesaver at night. Though the area can be a little noisy at night. Great location if you're planning to do the Four Waterfalls walk.
What a great weekend in this lovely Lodge. Wonderful welcome, quick check in. Great room, small but had everything & very comfortable bed, we didn't stir all night. Lovely home cooked breakfast , hot, tasty and a great choice. The bar was busy, cheery and we had a great evening meal. 1 tasty big fat juicy bacon & cheese burger, delicious . Great menu too. Good selection of beers, cocktails & their own brand gin, what's not to like. Waterfall walk was heaven, stunning views, great sounds. We walked 4 hours & could have gone on further, it was fabulous. Thank you to all the friendly staff for making us feel welcome & a part of your lovely home.
We had a lovely meal here in their outside garden, and it’s clear word has got around because the dining room was absolutely packed. Service was pretty fast given the crowd, and the range of meals went beyond the usual burgers, with a fabulous curry. But if you’re tempted to stay here be warned, 3 of the 4 rooms are the tiniest rooms I’ve ever seen, with a shower the size of towel rail. The rooms are clean, modern, quiet and beautifully appointed, but if you do stay here you will need to be travelling very light, or leave your bags in the car. The location can’t be beat for walking to the waterfalls, the track starts right across the street, but if you do want to stay, pay extra for the bigger room, which is a decent size and has plenty of space for bags, and in the bathroom. It’s well worth the extra money. Parking is at an open lot somewhere across the street, which didn’t feel safe, though we had no issues, and right now the entire area behind and alongside the hotel is a building site, which somewhat wrecked the ambience. Staff were superb, and food and drink top class, but the rooms are just too small.
